A Connecticut photographer is on a mission to take pictures of his closest friends … all 788 of them.
Ty Morin has already raised nearly $7,500 for his film-photo series “Friend Request: Accepted” with the help of a Kickstarter campaign. His plan is the travel around the world to take a picture of each of his Facebook friends doing something he or she is passionate about. And, of course, he will be filming his journey.
On his Kickstarter page, Morin admits that likely hasn’t spoken to half of the people he is friends with on Facebook. So why doesn’t he just go down his list and unfriend those people to make everything easier?
“Don't you think cutting out all those friends would defeat the purpose of this project?” Morin wrote on his Kickstarter page. “The goal of this project is to reconnect with people.”
Morin said that he plans to spend time with each person. Every portrait will take about an hour, Morin wrote on the Kickstarter page, and he plans on completing five per week. He said he plans to use an old-fashion 8x10 camera (the kind that looks like an accordion) instead of a snapping a quick pic using a digital camera and moving on to the next person.
With the help of a Kickstarter campaign, Morin has raised almost $7,500 for his project.
“My journey will consist of plane tickets, train tickets, and a lot of fuel,” he wrote. “All that traveling calls for more than just a hello.”
Because he will be using an old-school camera, Morin will have to develop each of the portraits in a dark room with chemicals. He wrote in his Kickstarter pitch that the majority of his funds will be funneled into that aspect of the project.
At his planned speed, Morin said “Friend Request: Accepted” will take about three years to complete.
The donations have poured in. Thanks to 208 backers (as of 6 p.m. on Saturday), Morin has raised $7,456, which is pretty good considering his original goal was $5,000. The campaign is slated to end on March 26.
This isn’t the first time that someone has embarked on a seemingly extreme social media-related mission. Artist Tanja Hollander is traveling about working her way through her list of Facebook friends, according to Mashable. Her venture is called The Facebook Portrait Project.
A woman spent 2011 traveling around the world with the goal of meeting all 324 of her Facebook friends to help her overcome crippling anxiety. She hit 11 countries and connected with 292 friends, or about 90% of her list.
