Some U.S. public schools are now paying students to attend school. Washington D.C. Public Schools is paying 305 students with poor academic performance and behavior to attend summer school, the news media has learned. Ninth graders are earning $5.25 an hour to participate in the "Summer Bridge" program, which is aimed at students identified by the D.C. Public Schools as less likely than their peers to graduate from high school in four years.
The 95 students, who voluntarily enrolled in the program of summer school, will receive half of an elective credit. But to complete the session with 400 at-risk students, DCPS approached the Department of Employment Services. More than 300 students marked by DCPS and who had registered for the Summer Employment Program were told that the school will be their summer job.
Melissa Salmanowitz, a spokesman for Chancellor Kaya Henderson said DCPS officials are going to study the results of this year, with the intention to expand the program next summer if it shows the expected results.
