With a week to Christmas, prices of foodstuffs and other items have skyrocketed in major markets in Lagos, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.
A survey carried out at Agege, Iyana-Ipaja, Egbeda and Baale markets, Egbeda, revealed that prices of consumable have gone up by about 30 per cent as Christmas approaches.Traders who spoke to P.M.NEWS blamed the increase on high cost of transporting goods to the markets and fuel scarcity.In Agege market, a bag of rice formerly sold for N8,400 now sells for N9,000 while a tin of beans which was sold for N300 now sells for N150. A plastic measure of garri which attracted N350 before now sells for N400. A gallon of groundnut oil now sells for N7,500 as against the former price of N6,800.
In Egbeda market, a carton of frozen chicken which formerly sold for N4,800 now sells for N5,500 while frozen turkey that sold for N5,900 now sells for N6,500 per carton. An average tuber of yam which was N300 before the Yuletide now sells for N500 while a gallon of kerosene that was N600 is now N700. A carton of indomie noodles which was N1,850 now sells for N2,500.
In Baale market also at Egbeda,a crate of eggs now sells for N650 as against the former N600. The popular frozen fish, kote, which used to sells for N6,500 but now attracts a price of N9,000 per carton while a tuber of yam moved up from N300 to N400.
However, conspicuously missing in all the markets are live chickens which is usually one of the main items sold in this season.
