Jada Pinkett Smith is open about the secret to success in her marriage with Will Smith.
Being married nearly 16 years in Hollywood is an almost impossible feat, but she said it’s quite simple.
“I’ve always told Will, ‘You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay,” Pinkett Smith told HuffPost Live. “At the end of the day, Will is his own man.”
Speculations that the Smiths have an open marriage began in 2009 when reports circulated that “The Pursuit of Happyness” star indicated his wife could be with other men if she felt the need to.
In the summer of 2011, Mrs. Smith was rumored to have had an affair with Marc Anthony while they were working on the TV show “HawthoRNe.” Their romance was said to be the cause of a possible divorce from her husband. Those stories were quickly dismissed as false.
Regardless of what some may speculate, Pinkett Smith, 41, is adamant about the importance of being an individual even when you’re in a relationship.
“At the end of the day, Will is his own man,” she continued. “I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.”
Still, she doesn’t hide the fact that things aren’t always roses in their lifelong commitment to one another.
“I don’t think it’s easy to be married to anyone,” she added. “I think that you have to go into a relationship knowing — especially when you’re dedicating yourself to someone for the rest of your life — this is a life partnership.”
Through it all, the Smiths have created a lasting relationship that beats the odds in Hollywood by a long shot, proving that their formula, whatever that may be, is working.
“He’s my best friend,” she described. “He’s been by my side through some of the most difficult parts of my life. And so that’s something you can never take away.”
The admiration Pinket Smith has for her man is definitely not one-sided as he too adores her.
“She is just absolutely hardcore,” Smith, 44, told People magazine in December. “She is absolutely unfazed by the weight and the pressures of life. She is so calm and cool and easy in any situation. She can bear anything, and I just love that about her.”
