Lagos State commissioner for Transportation, Comrade Kayode Opeifa has called on politicians, philanthropists and affluent members of the society to stop distributing motorcycles, and tricycles as poverty alleviation and employment instrument to members of the public.
Speaking in his office at Alausa, the Commissioner said these means of transportation are at variance with the transportation master-plan of the State Government.
He said rather than purchase multiple motorcycles and tricycles, these well meaning Nigerians should participate in the mass transit policy of the State Government by pulling resources together to invest in public transport related empowerment, job and wealth creation programmes which the State Government has lined up.
Opeifa said that on streets and areas where the operation of motorcycles and tricycles are restricted, the State Government would not condone the menace of such vehicles as they compound the traffic situation and orderliness by driving against traffic, on walkways and parking on streets not designated as parks and garages.
The Commissioner further appealed to all motorcycle and tricycle riders in the State operating within the areas allocated to them to carry out their businesses within the provision of the traffic rules and regulations and to go to the nearest Driver’s Institute and Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) for their accreditation.
