An open letter to Olamide: Baddo, have you heard of the point of equilibrium?

by Kayode Olamidapo

I am a fan of yours and I have followed your growth from the days with ID Cabasa and the Coded Tunes crew, to your days under Toni Payne‘s management. Parting ways with her was quite risky but I felt it was a move worth making as you needed a fully dedicated management to grow your career. That move paid off and you’re now better off for it.

Pitching your tent with 1805 Entertainment, your immense talent and the void left by Dagrin‘s demise meant only one thing – A top spot for you! I am glad you fit in perfectly. A bolder move to start YBNL Nation and you going ahead to drop your second album on the YBNL Nation/1805 Entertainment imprint was another risky move that still paid off. At that point, I knew the ‘god of music’ was behind you.

According to inside sources it is said that the rapper wouldn’t be jumping on any feature tracks for now, he would only feature on songs if he is paid a fee of ₦1m.  ‘We’re not ready to do that and even if we want to do that, the fee is very high… It’s one million naira for now‘, Rachael told NET over the phone add that the fee might go up as early as in a month’s time.  It’s not doubt that since releasing his second album ‘YBNL‘ in late 2012, Olamide has steadily risen to the list of top ranking Hip-hop artistes in the country. Olamide Drops Manager

Olamide has parted ways with his manager, Tony Nwakalor.
NET investigations revealed the pair stopped working together, following commitment issues from both parties..
A source close to the rapper told us he became unsatisfied with Nwakalor’s commitment to his career.
‘Olamide seemed to have lost confidence in Tony because since working with D’banj, Tony seemed to be more committed to D’banj than him and it doesn’t work like that’, said the source.

Olamide’s new manager who gave her name simply as Rachel, confirmed the situation, but declined giving further details.

‘Do you actually expect me to tell you that something happened? Nothing happened, he just changed management and that’s all.’

Why Olamide Rejected DBanj

For a while now, D’Banj and his management team have been planning to sign in rapper Olamide to the his label, however, Olamide turned down the Koko master’s offer, preffering to roll alone for now.

Olamide, who does not want to play the fool at this phase of his career, politely told D’Banj that he was not ready to surrender some of his powers, especially having to be booked for shows only by D’Banj’s management outfit, pleaded for time to even think about the offer as he still wants to work with his present team and taking things as they come for now.

He believes that for now, there is nothing D’BANJ could do for him that he can’t do by himself. In the future, I will consider his offer. If anybody wants me, he should have unfettered access to me. I am just starting out in the profession’, he allegedly told close friends.

Read Nigerian Rapper Olamide’s Grass To Grace Story

When grassroots-to-limelight Yoruba rapper, Dagrin, died in a road crash in 2010, the lamentation that greeted his passage had hardly died down when some other up-and-coming singers started scheming to fill the vacuum created.
As is done when star artistes pass on, they wanted to take advantage of the gap, with some of them not minding becoming new Dagrin…But as it normally happens in such a circumstance. All of them failed to realise their dreams.
The lesson they failed to learn is that, no artiste can really replace another one. That is why no one has been able to replace a Fela, Tupac or Sikiru Ayinde Barrister in the real sense of it. People may try to be opportunistic but it will be extremely difficult to convince listeners or the audience that the dead man has resurrected.
