In a rather interesting development, one Abraham Kegnon, of Mpape, Abuja has been ordered by an Abuja Magistrates’ Court to pay N100,000 as compensation to a farmer for burning his yams. Magistrate Musa Jobbo gave the order when Kegnon pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him.The magistrate also instructed that Kegnon should be held in prison until he pays the amount.
Police Prosecutor Musa Abdulahi had told the court that Mike Danladi, also of Mpape Village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Mpape Police Station on Jan. 11. Abdulahi said the convict entered the complainant’s farmland without his consent. According to him, “In the guise of hunting for snakes, he set the whole farmland ablaze, burning a hip of yams valued at N100,000.’’ He said that during investigation, the accused confessed to have committed the crime.
