Popular Indian actor Sanjay Dutt sentenced to five years in prison

A court in India today Thursday March 21st sentenced Bollywood top actor and host of India's version of the Big Brother reality-television franchise, Sanjay Dutt, to five years in jail for the illegal possession of firearms in a case connected to a series of bomb blasts that ripped through Mumbai and were one of the deadliest terror attacks in the country.

Mr. Dutt was sentenced to six years in prison in 2007 for illegal possession of weapons that were supplied to him by men subsequently convicted in the bombing. That court cleared Mr. Dutt of involvement with the bombing plot. He has denied involvement with the attacks and said he asked for the guns to protect his family.

He appealed the decision at the Supreme Court and was let out on bail in 2007. He has remained at liberty since then until today. The court reduced his sentence to five years but said the circumstances and nature of offense was so serious that Mr. Dutt cannot be released on probation. Mr. Dutt, 53 years old, already has spent a cumulative 18 months in jail on related charges.

Mr. Dutt will have to surrender within four weeks to serve the sentence, the court said

Mild drama unfolded: As Woman Dramatises Release After 4months in Kirikiri Prison

A mild drama unfolded yesterday at the Female Security Prisons, Kirikiri, Lagos, after a female banker who was released from prison, went wild in jubilation immediately the gates of the prison were flung open for her to go home.

The woman (names withheld) was slammed with a four-month imprisonment, over a two count charge of conniving with some persons to fraudulently withdraw millions of naira from the Okokomaiko branch of a first generation bank, last year.

Immediately she stepped out of the walls that had incarcerated her for months, she looked up to the sky, then to her left and right, apparently to ascertain which direction leads to her home.

Norway The Best Place To Go To Prison On Earth ?

In the law, being sent to prison is nothing to do with putting you in a terrible prison to make you suffer. The punishment is that you lose your freedom. If we treat people like animals when they are in prison, they are likely to behave like animals. Here, we pay attention to you as human beings.” — Arne Nilsen, Governor of Bastoy Prison, Norway

After reading Erwin James’ beautiful and didactic piece on Bastoy Prison in The Guardian newspaper of the UK on February 25, 2013, I was sunk in reverie. I thought of a scenario where it is possible for a convict to choose where to serve his or her jail term. Imagine a suspect saying: “My Lord, I plead guilty to all the crimes for which I have been charged by the prosecutor. My allocution is however that in sentencing me, temper justice with mercy by sending me to Bastoy Prison in Norway.”

See Notorious Dutch Prison Transformed Into Luxury Hotel (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

It was previously a place from which people desperately wanted to leave. As one of the Netherlands’ most feared prisons for almost 150 years, Het Arresthuis was not a place you would want to stay. But following its closure and something of a makeover, people are now paying good money to spend a night at the former jail.
