Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick set to rest in Prison for 28 years

DETROIT, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A federal judge gave former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick the sentence requested by prosecutors Thursday -- 28 years behind bars.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said the evidence was overwhelming that Kilpatrick and his longtime friend, Bobby Ferguson, a contractor for the city, defrauded Detroit in a bid-rigging and kickback scheme, the Detroit Free Press reported. Ferguson is usually to be sentenced Friday.

"One thing is certain," Edmunds said. "It was the citizens of Detroit who suffered."

Testimony showed that Kilpatrick and Ferguson put pressure on city officials to keep their scheme running, Edmunds said. She also said Kilpatrick lived well while presiding over what has become one of the poorest cities in the United States. Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy in July.

Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline.

Drama In Owerri As Freed Inmate Refuses To Leave Prison

It was a pathetic drama in the Owerri High Court premises Friday morning when an inmate who is believed to have awaited trial in prison for upwards of seven years was acquitted of any wrong doing and discharged by an Owerri Magistrate Court.  According to CrimeFacts, instead of the usual jubilation that follow any ruling of ‘discharged and acquitted’, the inmate, Sylvester Obata (not real names); wearing a long face, headed straight for the Prison van that brought them to court, only to be intercepted by a prison guard who reminded him he was free to go home.

To the chagrin of eyewitnesses, Obata said he was going nowhere demanding to be allowed entry into the Prison Van back to prison.  The prison guard who mistook Obata’s statement for a weird joke was jolted when he tried to push him away from the prison van and was defiantly resisted by the freed inmate.

Prison Break Season 200: ‘How we broke out of Shagamu prison’

Ejike Nkennachor is a 30-year-old robbery suspect. He shocked police detectives in Lagos when he narrated how he masterminded a prison break at the Maximum Prisons, Shagamu, Ogun State, to form a notorious robbery gang that specialises in snatching exotic cars.
“When I was arrested in 2008 at the state Criminal Investigations Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos for car snatching, I was charged to court but members of my family paid money to a lawyer that secured my release.
I spent only four months at the Ikoyi prison and my case was discharged for want of evidence. After my release, I went back to car snatching because I know my family will always come for me. I did it for some time and I snatched several exotic cars including a Mercedes Benz car that was valued around N12 million but I sold it for N800,000 to my receiver at Asaba, Delta State.

EXPOSED!!! ‘ How I escaped from Jos prison’ - Ex Prisoner

All around Abule Egba area of Lagos, they call him Okuta (Stone). But his real names are Oluwasegun Kokumo Raji. The fear of Okuta in that area and in the Lagos underworld of the 80s and 90s was the beginning of wisdom. He was feared and practically revered. But today he is an evangelist. Okuta, in this interview, took KAYODE FALADE through his past of ignominy, the brutal and ruthless world of the underworld and his final battle. Excerpts:
I had been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and I found myself in the Jos prison. There I began my sentence. But after a while, I thought about it: would I spend the next 10 years of my life in this hole? There and then the seed of escape started germinating in my mind. There were about eight gangs in the Jos Prisons then. They were the firewood gang, lavatory gang, the grass cutting gang, the kitchen gang – which I belonged to and others.
You would notice that wells are usually sunk very near the fence. This was also the case in the Jos prison then too. After sometime that I had been contemplating escape, I decided to share my thoughts with a slightly elderly inmate. He was serving life for illegal mining.

Another Prison Break in Nigeria, Same Reaction : 175 criminals let loose !!!

HOW many prison breaks would it take to secure our prisons? What will happen after the rash of media reactions to the break in Akure, in which 175 criminals were let loose?

Before Akure there have been jail breaks in Ibadan, Warri, Bauchi, Kano, Abuja (at the anti-robbery detention centre), and Port Harcourt. The reactions have always been the same – media talks, promises to address the situation, and forgetfulness until the next criminals free themselves.

16 Years Old boy gets 90 yrs jail term Prison for killing 1yr old baby

Sixteen-year-old Donald Ray Dokins'short stature and baby face belie the crime he committed: the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old boy in the arms of his proud and doting father.
As he willing to sentence the teenager, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Pat Connolly could barely contain his contempt. “You've no intestinal fortitude to sit up and look at me,” Connolly said to Dokins, who was simply staring at the floor, steering clear of the judge's gaze. “You've hatred in your heart that I can't understand.”

Prosecutors claim that on June 4, 2012, Dokins, a then-15-year-old gang member, rode up on a bicycle to a family gathered outside a home in Watts. He drew a revolver and opened fire, killing 14-month-old Angel Mauro Cortez Vega and wounding his 21-year-old father, Mauro Cortez. Dokins, authorities say, mistakenly believed the father was a member of a rival gang because of the color of his T-shirt.

Fred Ajudua remanded in prison over alleged N.69m fraud

An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday remanded a suspected fraudster, Fred Ajudua, who is standing trial for allegedly defrauding two foreigners.

The presiding judge, Justice Joseph Oyewole ordered that Mr Ajudua, who had absconded trial since 2005, should remain in custody till June 24 when his bail application would be ripe for hearing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2003 arraigned Mr Ajudua and his co-accused, Charles Hijiudu for allegedly defrauding two foreigners, Remy Cina and Pierre Vijgen, of about $1.69 million between July 1999 and September 2000.

Justice Oyewole had in January 2006 issued a bench warrant directing the police to arrest the accused and bring him to court, due to his continued absence in court.
He held in a ruling that “The first defendant ceased to be on bail since December 15, 2005 when his bail was revoked.”
