The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, gave reasons yesterday the Jonathan administration reversed its earlier position not to grant amnesty to the Islamist sect, Boko Haram.

He said President Goodluck Jonathan had to bow to pressure from notable personalities from the North, who pleaded for an amnesty deal to stop further killings by the sect. Okupe gave the explanation during a visit to the corporate headquarters of The Sun Publishing Ltd in Lagos.

A Nigerian asylum seeker in the United Kingdom, Mrs May Brown, who is married to a British man is fighting for her life in hospital after an overdose, even as she has been booked for deportation to Nigeria.

Mrs Brown, according to information, is due for deportation today after British authorities said her marriage to her husband, Michael Brown, was a sham.

Before she took the overdose, May reportedly said she feared her abusers would kill her if she returned to Nigeria because she witnessed her father’s death.

“If they send me back to Nigeria they are signing my death warrant, they will cut my life short because I will be killed,” she said.

According to information gathered on Mail Online on Wednesday, the lady, May Brown, a 19 year-old college student, fled to Britain from Nigeria, three years ago after witnessing her father’s murder and being subjected to sexual abuse.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ casual style was the subject of criticism in some South Korean media on Tuesday after he shook hands with President Park Geun-Hye, with one hand in his pocket.

The picture of the meet-and-greet between Gates and Park on Monday was splashed on the front page of every national daily, some of which cropped out the offending pocketed hand while most chose to highlight it.

“Cultural difference, or an act of disrespect?” the JoongAng Ilbo wrote in the accompanying caption.

A couple serving probation for the 2009 death of their toddler after they turned to prayer instead of a doctor could face new charges now that another son has died.

Herbert and Catherine Schaible belong to a fundamentalist Christian church that believes in faith healing. They lost their 8-month-old son, Brandon, last week after he suffered from diarrhea and breathing problems for at least a week, and stopped eating. Four years ago, another son died from bacterial pneumonia.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that a decision on charges will be made after they get the results of an autopsy.

Catherine Schaible's attorney, Mythri Jayaraman, cautioned against a rush to judgment, and said the couple are good parents deeply distraught over the loss of another child.

A prosecution witness testifying in the case of the alleged killer teething mixture, which the National Agency for Food Drugs, Administration and Control (NAFDAC) filed against three Nigerians yesterday told the court that laboratory analysis revealed that “My Pikin” teething mixture contained a deadly contaminant.

The witness, Mr. Momodu Segiru-Momodu, who is the NAFDAC Director of Chemical and Evaluation Research, stated this while giving evidence at the resumed hearing of the suit filed against Barewa Pharmaceutical Company Limited and two of their employees for the production of the alleged killer teething syrup.

Giving his testimony during the examinationin- chief conducted by the prosecutor, Mr Aminu Alilu, Segiru-Momodu told the court that on January 2009, he received a sealed package, containing samples of my Pikin teething mixture with batch number 02008 at the Yaba office of NAFDAC The witness said the samples were analysed in consonance with the laid procedure on microbiological and physiochemical assays.
