'UN Set to Honour Late Achebe This Month'



The United Nations has devoted Friday, November 15, 2013 to late Professor Chinua Achebe who died last march in Boston, US.Achebe was once a UN Goodwill ambassador from 1999 to 2005. The function holds at Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium, UN Headquarters, New York.In an invite sent to Vanguard by the United Nations SRC Society of Writers and United Nations SRC Film Society, the global body said the event featuring music, film, readings and recollections by family and friends, is part of Achebe's 83rd post-humous birthday celebrations.On its website, the United Nations Population Fund, through its Executive Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin said, “Mr. Achebe will forever be credited for his leading role in shaping the span of Africa's literary traditions and for conveying its authentic voice to the world at large.”

Nigeria Is The 6th Worst Country To Grow Old and die - UN **Do you Agree ??



In the same way Nigeria celebrated her 53rd anniversary yesterday, a new study was released by the UN backed Help Age International advocacy group which ranked Nigeria among the worst countries on earth that least care about their old population, same day. Out of 91 countries, Nigeria ranked 85, with an unhealthy record of catering for the well-being of seniors, people over the age of 60. This reflects its limited pension coverage, at 5 per cent and poor health care. Additionally, it ranks second lowest regionally, at 76, in the enabling environment domain, with only 53% of older Nigerians enjoying civic freedom.

Malala Yousafzai Breath Taking speech at the UN



Malala is the 16 year old Pakistani school girl and education activist who was shot in the head and neck in an assassination attempt by Taliban gunmen while returning home on a school bus on 9 October 2012. She marked her 16th birthday by addressing the United Nations at its headquarters yesterday Friday July 12th. Read her inspiration speech below and watch the video after the cut..
Thank you to every person who has prayed for my fast recovery and a new life. I cannot believe how much love people have shown me. Dear friends, on October 9, 2012, the Taliban shot me on the left side of my forehead. They shot my friends too. They thought that the bullets would silence us. But they failed. And then, out of that silence came, thousands of voices.

Zaaki Azzays honoured with a UN Peace ambassadorial award



Months after being accused by his estranged wife of battery, Zakky Azzay has been honored with a United Nations Peace Ambassadorial award. He was among the few Nigerian celebrities decorated as UN peace ambassadors in Lagos yesterday Sunday January 20th.
